Hiking the AT – Black Rock Overlook / Apple Orchard Mountain/ The Guillotine / Thunder Ridge
(5/21/19) I awoke in the campground cabin bunk bed this morning. It was actually a little chilly. Which is a surprise seeing how it was so hot last night when we went to bed. We had the AC running on full blast set on 60 degrees all night. That might have had something to do with it:) I got up and bumped the temp up to 70 degrees and figured I'd go ahead and start my day. Like a lot of places we stayed at, that weren't traditional hotels, the internet and phone reception was pretty spotty. So
Hiking the AT – the Lithuanian Solo Hiker / Campground Pitstop
(05/2/19) I didn’t sleep well at all last night. I'm not sure why. I didn’t fall asleep until after 11PM. I tossed and turned all night. I think there may have been caffeine in one of the flavor packets I put in my water late in the afternoon before I ate dinner. After a late start yesterday and hiking all day in 90+ degree temps, my plan was to get up earlier this morning and hike while it was still relatively cool outside. The sun rises at 6AM but seeing how it was so late already I knew
Hiking the AT – Mountvale / Taylor Mountain / Mad Max / Fit Joins the Party
I awoke to the sounds of boy scouts and their leaders packing up and talking loudly amongst themselves at 5:45AM. They didn’t seem to realize others were still sleeping around them. Even though there were several of us in tents not stirring or making any noise. They packed up and headed out of camp shortly afterwards. I usually got up around this time anyway, if not earlier, so it wasn't a big deal really. I ate, caught up on some work items, journaled, packed, resupplied water, checked out some possible end points for the
Hiking the AT – Battling a Cold / Boy Scout Troop / Mulligan’s Kindness
As usual, I woke up fairly early. I still wasn't feeling well. Which is never ideal, but even more so when you've got to get out of the comforts of town, and closeness of medical help, should you need it. I went down to the hotel lobby for breakfast. I had waffles, bagels, cereal, oatmeal, and apple and some coffee. I went back up to the room and worked for a bit until Mulligan got up. We both tidied up some work items before packing our stuff up and checking out of the hotel. We had a few
Hiking the AT – 2 Zero Days / Mulligan’s Video Work / My Company Work
I woke up not feeling very well. Like my body was fighting a cold or something. So I slept in a little later than usual. I finally got up and showered. I took a shower the night before, but when we went into towns, and had access to showers, we definitely took advantage of them. Sometimes even taking 3 showers a day. When you go for days without being able to take a shower, you get pretty dirty. I went downstairs to the hotel lobby for breakfast. I had one of everything, which included: yogurt, a bowl of oatmeal, a
Hiking the AT – McAfee Knob Round 2 / Tinker Cliffs / A Free Ride
I was sleeping peacefully in my tent when I heard a loud crashing and fumbling sound coming towards me. I sat up in my tent immediately. I remember someone telling me how you can tell the difference between deer walking around at night and bears. Deer are more elegant with more precision in each and every step. Like they pay attention to where they are walking. Bears are not. They are like drunken elephants fumbling all over the place breaking limbs off trees and causing all kinds of ruckus. This definitely sounded more like drunken
