Hiking the AT – Lovers Leap / The Erwins / Trigger

I stayed in a cabin last night. So I was warm for once. Got up, ate breakfast, did laundry, knocked out some work items, checked the weather forecast, and mapped out the next few days of my trek. Starting at Laughing Heart Hostel and camping at a hostel in Erwin, TN. I got a lift back to the hostel. I saw City entering the hostel. I met him a week or so ago just north of New Found Gap at a shelter when it snowed. I resupplied at the Dollar Store in town and walked through downtown Hot

Hiking the AT – Crazy Dream / Returning the Favor

As I mentioned in my last post I wanted to try out this trash bag tick another thru hiker told me about. You essentially stick your feet in a trash bag and pull it up around you as high as it will go and then slip into your sleeping bag. It’s supposed to keep you warm at night. So I tried it. I remember drifting off to sleep feeling very cozy and warm. Several hours later while in a deep sleep I dreamt I was lying on my back on the ground. All of a sudden an electrical

Hiking the AT – The Marvelous Max Patch & The Garbage Bag Trick

I awoke, as usual, cold. It got down to 34 degrees overnight. With all of the fog outside, and my body inside the tent producing heat, everything was wet from condensation. I fell asleep pretty early. Which means I woke up pretty early the next morning. So it was still dark out. I managed to muster up enough energy to pull out my phone and get caught up on some work items. I turned on my JetBoil to get some water boiling for some oatmeal. While that was heating up I started packing up my stuff in my

Hiking the AT – UFO on Mountain Top?

I stayed in a cabin last night so I slept well for once. It was nice. We don’t know how good we have it in this modern day and age until it’s taken away from us. Simple things like comfy beds, hot showers, and warm meals, are luxuries we should never take for granted. I got my laundry done, resupply taken care of, and showered. These are the 3 things we do every time we get off the trail. I plowed through some work items as well and got packed up once again and caught a ride back

Hiking the AT – Feds Arrest Man in Deadly Machete Attack on the AT

I just want to thank everyone who has reached out to me to make sure I’m okay regarding this incident. I was close to where this occurred but luckily far enough away to not be affected directly. You may recall this is the same guy who was arrested about a month ago for harassing people on the AT with a machete. Well he was released and now has killed a hiker and badly injured another. Though I did not know the guy that was killed personally, I can say that the entire AT thru hiking community is utterly shocked and

Hiking the AT – What Happens When Your Parachute Doesn’t Open?

I slept ok. I tented in the snow on slight hill, so I slid around quite a bit. That and temperature got down to 35. As always during these cold mornings, I was slow to get up and emerge from my warm sleeping bag. I ate breakfast and caught up on some work items before starting my day. I packed my stuff and climbed out of my tent. Shoeless was already packed up and ready to hit the trail. I still needed to take down my tent and get water so I told him I’d see him up
