Hiking the AT – Bed Bugs, Peeing Blood, Dismal Falls & Visiting Family

I awoke in my tent. I slept pretty well. The weather has been fairly nice lately. Not too hot, not too cold. And obviously it gets a little cooler at night but it’s comfortable. I got a little work done, did some writing, made and ate a quick breakfast, packed my stuff, and was ready to hit the trail. The others had already left the campsite... except for Mulligan and I as usual. I told him I was off and I’d see him up the trail. One thing I may not have

Hiking the AT – Reaching the 600 Mile Marker / A Long Black Snake / Speaking Chinese

I awoke to the sound of an alarm going off at 4:45am. Though it wasn’t mine or Mulligan’s. It was coming from the motel room next to us. And no one was shutting it off. Which meant it was probably set by the person who was in the room two nights before. So it just buzzed and buzzed and buzzed. I got up at 5am and showered. Since the motel didn’t include breakfast, I made some coffee quietly in our room, grabbed a pop tart and maneuvered my way towards the desk.  Our clothes were still hanging

Hiking the AT – You are Wolverine / Bushy Mountain Burger / Motel Mix & Mingle

I awoke in my tent. We had a long day yesterday so I slept pretty well. I prepared and ate a little breakfast as I caught up on some work items. I heard several people leave camp as I packed up my stuff. Others were gathering around the picnic table by the shelter eating breakfast. So I went over to say good morning to them all. I met Evergreen and Tater. Two new hikers I hadn’t met before. When I told them I was Wolverine, they perked up and said, “oh, you’re who everyone was looking for last night?”

Hiking the AT – Chestnut Knob Shelter / Surly / A Painfully Long Day

I awoke in my tent by a creek. I slept pretty well. I cooked and ate breakfast, caught up on some work, and packed my stuff up. By the time I was done everyone except for Mulligan and I had left (again). I told Mulligan I was getting started and I’d see him up the trail. There was a steep climb out of our tent site.  Then it was a steady decline for quite a few miles. The trail leveled out by a river. I was flying. It was nice to have several miles of downhill and flat

Hiking the AT – Crossing the 1/4 Mark (~550 miles)

It rained unexpectedly a little last night. So the outside of my tent was wet from rain, and the inside was a little damp from moisture. It wasn’t too bad though. I hung the rain fly from my tent in a nearby tree to let it dry while I worked a little and cooked and ate breakfast. By the time I had finished everyone had left camp already. Everyone except Mulligan. He likes to sleep in a bit. I packed up my stuff, refilled on water, told Mulligan I’d see him up the trail, and headed out. It

Hiking the AT – “Country Road” Heard Around the World

I woke up in a hotel bed this morning. So I slept pretty well. I showered and headed downstairs to take advantage of the free breakfast the hotel offered. There were a couple of hikers there we ran into at the Highlands Inn. We said our “good mornings” but did’t talk much. I think we were all still trying to wake up. So we focused on downing some coffee instead. The regular coffee ran out so I told the lady at the front desk. She told me she put regular coffee in the decaf container so I could
