Hiking the AT – Stranded in Virgina / Rescued by an Angel from West Virgina

Woke up on a cot in the Highlands General Store and Inn. I slept pretty well. I shared a room with Mulligan who was still asleep. So I laid there quietly catching up on some writing from the past few days. I wasn’t able to get any NicheLabs work done because the Internet was down at the inn... and I didn’t have cell reception either. Catching up on some work was one of the reasons I got off trail too. Not good. When Mulligan woke up we went downstairs to the inn for breakfast. We both had sausage

Hiking the AT – Me, Mulligan, and My Little Ponies @ Grayson Highlands

I was awoken in the middle of the night by howling sounds of what I thought were wild dogs. They were about 50 yards away from our camp site. We were tenting fairly close to one another so immediately following the howling I could hear others rustling around on their air mattresses. I softly said out loud, “what the hell was that!?” Mulligan, the closest to me replied, “coyotes.” Wow, that’s cool, I thought. I probably wouldn’t have thought so had they continued all night or got closer to us....neither of which happened, thank goodness. Later that morning

Hiking the AT – Buzzard Rock / Norovirus Outbreak / The Dirty Dozen

I awoke in my tent at a shelter 11 miles outside of Damascus. I had quite a bit of work to catch up on so I did so before emerging from my tent. Everyone except Savage, Bruiser and Mulligan had already set sail on the trail for the day. I packed up and headed out myself. I had a slight uphill to start, then several miles downhill. I stopped at the next shelter for a break. Sookie, Spirit, and Tom were all there eating lunch. Mulligan caught up with us and sat down at the shelter table for

Hiking the AT – “Virginia is for Lovers”

I awoke in my “he shed” out behind Woodchuck Hostel. It got pretty cold last night. Like I think I would have been warmer in my sleeping bag in my tent. The little electric heater in my room didn’t do much good. But regardless, I got some sleep, and I had some privacy in the morning to work a little more before venturing into the hostel for a shower. When I got into the hostel there was a group getting ready to go out for breakfast at the Damascus Diner. They asked me if I wanted to join.

Hiking the AT – Entering My 4th State, VA / Welcome to Damascus

I camped out last night at a shelter. It got a little chilly early in the morning but not too bad. I ate a quick breakfast, packed up and hit the trail. As usual it warmed up pretty quickly as I got moving. I crossed over hwy TN 91 into a big green pasture. I could see a barn just up ahead. Even from far away I could see a huge AT logo on it. Needless to say the owner of the barn and land was hiker friendly. I made it to the barn and snapped some pics

Hiking the AT – Watagua Dam / Sleeping with the “Beasts”

I’m not sure if I ever fully fell asleep last night. Knowing I was camping in an aggressive bear area I seemed to flinch at every little sound outside my tent. Thank goodness I was setup close to a small stream. The sound of the rushing water drowned out some of the noises outside. This allowed me to doze off at some point. I was awoken by several large “somethings” close by in the woods. I could tell they were fairly large as every few minutes they’d step on a branch and I’d hear it “crack!” Whatever they
