Hiking the AT – The AT Diet / Tinder on the AT!? (Zero Day)

I took a zero day after a wonderful week hiking with Cushy, Trigger and Snickers. I had a bit of work to catch up on, so by taking a day off, I was able to do so. Plus the regular tasks of bathing, laundry and resupplying food. Well I’ve gone from 235 lbs to 210 lbs in the first month hiking on the AT. So I’ve lost 25 lbs in 30 days. I made the mistake of bringing my “city” diet out into the wild. You can’t hike 15-20+ miles a day eating beef jerky and sugar free protein bars

Hiking the AT – Beer Baseball / Feeding the Bees

Another good nights sleep in the bee farm cabin bunk house bed. Trigger got up before the rest of us and got the coffee brewing once again. We all got up and huddled around the kitchen table with coffee and hand, trail food breakfast in the other, and discussed our plans for the day. We were starting at Spivey Gap and hiking to Uncle Johnnys Hostel— about a 12 mile day. Cushy, Trigger, Snickers and myself piled into Mike’s truck and headed to our drop off spot. Would you believe it? Trail magic once again! In the

Hiking the AT – The Balds / Honey Wine

We awoke in our bunk house beds, again at the bee farm, after a good nights rest. Trigger again started our morning off right with a fresh brewed pot of coffee. We helped ourselves to a cup while gathering around the kitchen table to discuss the game plan for the day. Which was 13 miles from Sam’s Gap to Spivey Gap. Mike, the bee farm owner, arrived promptly on time to pick us up. We hopped in his truck and off we went. We arrived at Sam’s Gap and got started around 830am. This was the first time

Hiking the AT – Meeting Mighty Blue / The Return of Snickers

I woke up comfortably in a bed at the bee farm. We all slept in a bunk house cabin. One by one myself, Trigger, Cushy and Wait a Minute all made our way to the table located in the kitchen area for breakfast. Trigger got coffee going as we each pulled out trail food from our food bags. We ate together and discussed the game plan for the day. We knocked out 20 miles yesterday so because of that and logistical issues, today was just going to be a 10 mile day. It was either that or the

Hiking the AT – Cantarroso Farm / Shelton Graves

I woke up in a Marriott hotel bed so needless to say I was warm, comfortable and had a good nights sleep. Trigger and I shared a room, while Cushy and Wait a Minute shared another. I was up fairly early for breakfast at the hotel. Everyone was up pretty early actually as we had a big day ahead of us. Our goal was 20 miles. Cushy was on point with planning and had a shuttle ready to take us to our starting point for the day. But first, we needed to check in to our “home” for

Hiking the AT – There’s Something in the Water / Back to a Cushy Life

Woke up in a hostel bunkhouse bed. I slept really well. It sounded like it was raining all night, but it was actually the sound of the creeks and waterfalls outside our door. The rainfall did come early in the morning though. The temperature dropped and the rain turned to sleet, and from sleet into snow. It was quite baffling to think just 18 hrs ago I was hiking up a mountain out of Hot Springs in mid 70 temps and now it was snowing. Trigger and I woke up about at the same time. We huddled around the small
