Hiking the AT – Passing the 700 Mile Marker / Climbing Dragon’s Tooth / McAfee Knob before Sunset

I awoke in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Which meant I had to get up and out of my warm sleeping bag. I felt my body temperature drop almost immediately when I exited my tent. When I returned, my tent and bag were both cold. It’s amazing how much of your body heat is contained within a super thin walled tent. I tossed and turned a bit throughout the night afterwards. I just couldn't seem to get warm again. I stayed bundled up in my sleeping bag as long

Hiking the AT – the Audie Murphy Memorial / Dumpster Diving for Food

I awoke in a hotel bed. I slept pretty well. Though I was pretty exhausted from my trip back to my parents’ house in Georgia to surprise my Mom for Mother's Day. So I was a little slow to get moving this morning. But, as usual, I got up, and plowed through some work items that piled up over the weekend. Mulligan got up, we scarfed down some breakfast from the hotel lobby, packed up our stuff, and met up with Saunter, the Colonel, and Foundation. We discussed our game plan for the day, then

Hiking the AT – Zero Days – Making Time for Mom on Mother’s Day

There's nothing quite like a good night's sleep in a big comfy bed after sleeping on the ground in a tent for several days. Okay, well, maybe a hot shower... that's pretty amazing too. As usual, Mulligan and I shared a room. He typically stays up later in the evenings and thus gets up later in the mornings. I'm the early to bed, early to rise guy. So I quietly plowed through some work items while I had the chance. I received text messages from both the Colonel and Saunter inviting me to join

Hiking the AT – a Trail of Towering Rock Piles  / Spectacular Views from Slanted Rockfaces / A Party of 2 Becomes 5

The forecast called for rain last night but we made it through the night without any at all-- until now. I awoke to the sounds of rain spitting on my tent. Packing up a wet tent and carrying it on your back all day is never fun. I typically like to take my time in the morning but with the constant pitter-patter of rain on my tent I was motivated to get up and get things packed before everything got soaked. Within 15 - 20 minutes I had everything shoved in my backpack and made

Hiking the AT – Walk & Talk with Derby / Eating Healthy / Conducting Business on the AT

I awoke to my natural alarm clock in the woods...the sounds of birds chirping and singing. We discovered why the location we camped at was called Wind Rock. Located at the top of a rocky mountain, the fierce winds blew all night, howling as our tents swayed back and forth. We were setup behind a rock formation that created a barrier for us. I could only imagine how windy it would have been without it's protection throughout the night. It wasn't too chilly for once so I was eager to get up and start

Hiking the AT – Goodbye Angel’s Rest Hiker Haven / Unbearable Foot Pain / Wind Rock Sunset

I awoke in the bunk house of Angel’s Rest Hiker Haven once again. I slept okay. I would have slept better had I not eaten Mexican 3 nights in a row. My stomach was in knots. So I kept tossing and turning throughout the night. Though I’ve enjoyed my stay at this hostel, I’m looking forward to moving on today, and wandering back into the wildernesses. I plowed through a little work before packing up my belongings and meeting a few others for breakfast. A nice older lady that worked at
