Hiking the AT – Laurel Falls / Watagua Lake / Aggressive Bears

I slept in my tent at Moreland Gap shelter. I was a little slow getting up in the morning. So by the time I emerged from my tent, those who camped at the shelter the night before, I had already packed up and hit the trail. I ate a quick breakfast, caught up on some work items, packed up myself, and started my daily trek. As I mentioned in my post yesterday, this stretch of the AT is absolutely beautiful. My day started off with me walking alongside of amazing rushing creeks. I came to a long foot

Hiking the AT – Walking in a Wonderful Waterfall Land / Giving Birth Asleep?

I awoke in a cabin bed so I slept well. I was eager to get back on the trail to see if I could catch up with Uptown and also Snickers. So I gulped down some coffee, quickly ate some breakfast, and hopped in my ride back to the AT. On the way I was corresponding with Snickers via text to see where we might be able to meet. Just when I thought we had things figured out he informed me he got a call from his wife in regards to an emergency at work that was

Hiking the AT – The Monsoon Over Hump Mountains

I don’t know if anyone else slept well last night. The high winds rocked the barn to the point I literally thought it was going to collapse. Rain and dirt from the cracks in the barn walls splattered on me all night as the wind howled and whistled around us. I pulled my sleeping bag over my head to cover my face and try to get some sleep. I guess it could have been worse. I could have been in the other smaller shelter with only three walls even more exposed to the weather. Or in a

Hiking the AT – The Balds / Over Mountain Shelter

Woke up a little chilly in my tent. But not too bad. Did my morning ritual of breakfast, catching up on work and writing, then packing up my stuff. This morning for breakfast though I didn’t eat my regular cold oatmeal. I wanted to eat whatever was the heaviest food item in my pack. It just happened to be rice and beans. Not the most ideal meal for breakfast. But I’ve started to eat whatever is the heaviest item, not what I desire to eat the most. It’s all about dropping pack weight. Every little bit helps. Especially

Hiking the AT – A “Beauty-ful” Spot

Though I went to bed fairly warm for once in my tent, at some point in the middle of the night I got pretty chilly. So I woke up bundled up in my sleeping bag once again. By the time I ate breakfast, completed a little work, and packed all of my stuff up, the young couple I met the night before had already left. The other guy, Up State, was just finishing packing as well. So we chatted for a bit and ended up getting back on the trail at the same time. So we hiked a

Hiking the AT – A Walk with Waterfalls

Woke up in a warm cabin bed. I slept well. After my zero day I was ready to get back on the trail. The person that contacted Mighty Blue to find out if he knew of anyone that was running a business while hiking the AT contacted me. So I called her back on my way back to the trail. She had some questions about the challenges regarding running a business and hiking at the same time. I shared my experiences with her. From being able to take phone calls to working from your phone and taking
