Hiking the AT – Trail Angel Peach / Chimney Rock / Three Ridges / Devil’s Backbone Brewery
Last night, I checked the weather, and the forecast was calling for damaging winds and possible hail. There was a 60% chance. Well, we didn't get any hail, thank goodness, but we did get a lot of rain and high winds. If that wasn't enough to keep me up, owls 'who whoooo'n and coyotes howling throughout the night certainly was. So needless to say, I didn't sleep very well. Mulligan was already up as well. He too didn't sleep well either. We had been out on the trail for several days now, and it was time
Hiking the AT – Tar Jacket Ridge / Spy Rock / The Priest
(05/26/19) I awoke once again in my tent. I was pretty comfortable. Well, as comfortable as one can be sleeping on the ground on a light weight mattress in a sleeping bag fighting off bugs and spiders that somehow managed to get into my tent overnight. I could hear there was a breeze outside. I could feel my clothes were still wet from the rain shower that hit us late in the day yesterday. So I got out and hung my clothes up to dry out on a tree branch close by. As always, I finished
Hiking the AT – Climbing Bald Knob / Girl Scouts / Caught in Lightning Storm
(05/25/19) It was so hot last night in my tent I went to bed in my shorts and a t-shirt. At some point in the middle of the night I got cold, so I slid into my sleeping bag for warmth. I awoke before dawn but was able to fall back to sleep. The sun came up around 6AM. I was up myself shortly afterwards. I had a quick bite to eat, packed up, and emerged from my tent. Mulligan was already up as well. We finished packing up our stuff and
Hiking the AT – 5 yo boy dies / a haunted shelter / glowing orbs in the night
We stayed in a Howard Johnson hotel last night. It was recently renovated so the hotel is in great shape. Another morning of waking up in a big comfy bed-- I couldn't complain. Though I took a shower the night before, I took another one this morning-- just in case I missed any of the dirt build up from the previous days out on the trail. Next up on my morning ritual while in town, breakfast. I ventured down to the hotel lobby to dig in. On the menu this morning: biscuits & gravy, eggs, cereal,
Hiking the AT – Colonel Returns / Devil’s Backbone Brewery / Apple Orchard Falls
(5/23/19) I got a little late start on my day. I'm not sure why. We didn't have a long day of hiking yesterday. I was in bed at a decent time. Perhaps I just felt like sleeping in a bit since I was in a comfortable hotel bed. As usual, when we stayed in hotels, I quietly grabbed a few things, and ventured downstairs to the dining area for some coffee and breakfast. I finished filling my belly and headed back up to the room. Mulligan got up just as I finished plowing through
Hiking the AT – Derby vs. Lime Disease / Derby 1 – Lime Disease 0 / James River Footbridge
(05/22/19) I remember the temperature dropping last night while we were eating dinner. We didn't have a fire going as we all agreed we were just going to eat and climb into our tents and call it a night. It was myself, Mulligan, Derby, Space Jam and Orange. We were eating, chatting about our daily events, plans for the next day, then all of a sudden, it got cold, really cold. The temperature continued to drop overnight. I remember waking up a few times chilled to the bone. Which meant a cold morning, and being unmotivated
